Do-It-Yourself Halloween Decorations

In keeping with the theme of the holiday I found the following projects to be fun to create and easy to do!

This is a great article.

You can turn any home into a haunted house for Halloween by adding the right Halloween decorations. Here are simple do-it-yourself suggestions for Halloween decorations that you, your family, and the neighbors will enjoy this fall.

Gourd Candleholders

Dim lighting is essential in creating the right Halloween mood so work on that as the first of your Halloween decorations. Create a low light atmosphere in your home by using candles instead of overhead lighting. To create a spooky candleholder, cut a hole in the center of a gourd, squash, or miniature pumpkin. This might be hard to do so start by gently rocking the knife back and forth until you create a slit. Keep moving the knife carefully until there is an open section large enough to hold a candle.

Safety warning: Make sure you put the candleholder on a tray with aluminum foil. As with all Halloween decorations, advise your children to stay away from the flame.

Witch’s Cauldron

To create the ultimate witch’s cauldron you will need a large bowl, dry ice, and water. You can purchase dry ice from a local ice cream parlor or grocery store. Put the dry ice in a container with a tight lid. Then submerge the container in water. Warm water will produce more smoke that will disappear rapidly while colder water will produce less smoke that will last longer. You can put the cauldron at your front door or as the centerpiece on your dining room table.

Safety warning: Do not touch the dry ice with your bare hands. Either use tongs or thick gloves. Make sure that children do not play with the dry ice.

Glowing Ghosts

A glowing ghost is the perfect example of how simple and fun making Halloween decorations can be. Activate a mini glow stick, slip it inside a balloon, and blow up the balloon. Position the knot of the balloon at the top center and use a black marker to make a face. Use a thin or transparent white cloth to cover the balloon, cut a small hole in the cloth and push the knot through so you can tie a string to it and hang it from a tree, your door, or a lamppost in your front yard. Your glowing ghost will blow in the wind, letting all your neighbors know that Halloween has arrived.

Halloween’s just around the corner. It’s that time of year again when ghosts and goblins roam the streets. Here are some ideas for Halloween costumes that are easy to execute.

Pumpkin Halloween Activities for Toddlers
Written by Nicole Dean

Halloween inspires all kinds of activities to do with your toddler, especially pumpkin fun! Visiting the pumpkin patch together, shopping for (or making) Halloween costumes, and decorating the house. But one of the best Halloween activities is doing art projects together.

Here are two very simple pumpkin activities that every toddler can enjoy. Prepare for the activity in advance, so your little ball of energy can dive right in.

Pumpkin Painting
Oftentimes younger children miss out on the fun of jack-o-lanterns, because they obviously are too young to handle a knife. A toddler can scoop pumpkin guts, and draw a face onto a pumpkin, but then the rest must be handed over to an adult for the actual carving.

Here’s an option. Pumpkin Painting. Think of how much fun your toddler or preschooler would have designing a pumpkin from beginning to end. And, don’t stop with pumpkins. Paint gourds, too. Simply put an old t-shirt on your toddler, get out non-toxic paints and he’ll go to town.

Simple Paper Jack-o-Lantern
There’s nothing at all fancy about this idea. Simply cut a few pumpkins out of orange construction paper. Then, cut several triangles and a few big goofy grins out of either black or yellow paper. Lastly, cut a stem out of green or brown paper.

Present the pieces to your toddler along with a glue stick and watch his creativity. You’ll treasure those three-eyed jack-o-lanterns years from now.

Spending time with your toddler is not difficult and doesn’t need to be challenging. Just give him the tools, grab your camera, and relax. Your child will feel cherished, and you’ll begin a tradition of making memories together.

Watch out Picasso. There’s a new artist in town.

Photo Ideas To Make Your Scrapbook A Work Of Art

It’s that time of year again. The weather is starting to get cold out so we finally have an excuses to stay indoors and scrapbook all of our wonderful adventures from summer. It’s time to pull everything out of the closest, dust it off and get moving.

To help you get motivated and in the creative mood here is a new article I came across to help spice up your scrapbooking ideas by giving tips on how to take great photographs and include them in your memory books.

I esepcially agree with and live by the rule to always have your camera at the ready. You will never know when the perfect moment will come up and your’ll need to get it on film.

Tiger and Lily Boutique is working on a few new ideas for some downloadable/printable scrapbooking art and layouts. Keep check back here for updates on that.

Photos bring your scrapbook to life. The placement and type of photos you choose will make the difference between an ordinary scrapbook and a scrapbook that truly tells a story.

You can place your pictures individually or as a collage, and create colorful borders through the use of ribbons, beads, captions, and artwork. The possibilities are endless when deciding how to place your pictures in your scrapbook and what items you should use to make decorative borders.

Deciding which photos to use in your scrapbook can be a difficult task. Here are a few tips on taking pictures that make great scrapbook additions:

Take candid photos of people doing everyday things such as playing a game, participating in sports, or relaxing in a favorite chair. Make sure you get pictures of people interacting with others.

This is one of the best ways to fully capture a person’s personality and facial expressions. Your subjects do not need to be looking directly at the camera. Photos of people simply being themselves are among the best additions that will make your scrapbook unique.

When taking photos of children, make sure to bend or squat so you capture the child at his or her own level. The idea is to create natural photos, not ones that are staged and arranged especially for a photo album.

Keep your camera within easy reach so you can snap the perfect pictures at a moments notice. School pictures and professional photos are great as additions to your scrapbook, but you will want pictures that tell a story of the person’s life as well. The very best scrapbook pictures are ones that capture spontaneous moments.
